We begin our journey in Darjeeling. This "Hill Station" has retained much of its colonial charm from past times. The "Toy Train," built around 1880, transported the English colonialists from the hot plains to the cool mountains. Today, this place is world-famous for its many tea plantations and top-quality tea.
In the former kingdom of Sikkim, we admire Buddhist monasteries and the diverse nature. During our stay with a host family, we gain a good insight into the daily life of the Sikkimese people. This former Himalayan kingdom, located between Bhutan and Nepal, has yet to be discovered by mass tourism. In Bhutan, we visit impressive Dzongs, ancient monasteries, and small villages. A hike brings us to one of Bhutan's holiest monasteries, the famous "Tiger's Nest" in the Paro Valley. The monastery clings spectacularly to a steep rock face, hundreds of meters above the valley floor. This simple round trip is very varied and includes many highlights. The program includes only short hikes of 1 to 3 hours, which can also be skipped. A very diverse journey through Bhutan and Sikkim | Ride on the Toy Train in Darjeeling | Ancient monasteries and holy lake in Sikkim | Hike to the sacred monastery (Tiger's Nest) in Bhutan | Punakha Dzong, the most beautiful Dzong in Bhutan.

CULTURE AND NATURE IN SIKKIM
Cultural Tour with optional hikes
16 days from/to Zurich
Maximum altitude: 13,123 feet
08.11.2025 - 23.11.2025
November 2026
The small former kingdom of Sikkim lies between Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet and is now part of India. The region ranges from hot, subtropical areas at 300 meters to icy heights of over 8000 meters. In this small space, there is an impressive biodiversity.
Many residents are involved in agriculture. Fifteen years ago, the small Indian state had the visionary idea to convert agriculture in all of Sikkim to organic farming. Today, 66,000 small farmers refrain from using any pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. With this unique project, Sikkim has become a shining example for many other countries and regions. On our tour, the beautiful nature, scenic highlights, and the lives of the locals are at the forefront. We have the opportunity to stay with a local family and get a wonderful insight into village and family life in Sikkim. Additionally, we will visit the most beautiful monasteries and oldest temples in this culturally rich region.

North Sikkim is visited by only a few Western tourists and has been able to preserve much of its authenticity. On this journey, we stay with local families and in simple rooms. We shouldn't expect luxury, but we gain an insight into the life of Sikkimese families, which is unfortunately denied to most travelers. We marvel at the hospitality of these people and get a wonderful glimpse into village and family life in Sikkim.
This journey focuses on heartfelt encounters, beautiful nature, and the ancient Buddhist culture. On easy hikes, we walk through small villages, reach fantastic viewpoints, wander through idyllic valleys, or visit remote monasteries. We can also enjoy a hot bath in a healing spring. This is an extraordinarily varied journey through the unknown northern part of Sikkim. During the optional extension after the two-week tour in North and East Sikkim, we explore the west of this former kingdom.

At 8,586 meters, Kangchenjunga is the third-highest mountain in the world. Majestically, it rises above Sikkim. This 8,000-meter peak marks the border between Sikkim and Nepal. We embark on an exciting circuit trek along an unusual route to this massive ice giant. The outward journey follows ancient shepherd paths, and we return on the classic route.
Along the way, we enjoy the fantastic mountain panorama with numerous snow-capped and ice-covered peaks. The highest point of our trek is the nearly 5,000-meter-high Goecha La, where we are in close proximity to the third-highest mountain in the world. In terms of landscape, Sikkim is considered one of the most diverse regions in the Himalayas. Below the towering snow peaks, Sikkim is very green and a botanical paradise with dense forests, rhododendrons, orchids, and giant ferns. The former kingdom of Sikkim, now part of India, lies between Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet and is also culturally extremely diverse. Before and after the trek, we visit the most fascinating places in Sikkim.
