Michael and I went with Terralaya on a six day trek from Yuksom to Dzongri, West Sikkim. We were just the two of us, and we were accompanied by a guide, a cook, two kitchen hands cum poney handlers, and three poneys. The trek took place at the end of October and we had good weather and often clear visibility, no rain, and very reasonable temperatures, even if the last night up at 4300 metres did go well down into the negatives!! The price was very reasonable. It is difficult to begin to describe our trek. For both us it was a wonderful experience. Our little group of 6 was just perfect! Our guide, Tsheten, was the best guide that anyone could possibley ask for. He was accutely intelligent, spoke perfect English, was extremely safety-conscious and security-minded, and, more importantly, knew how to handle a 60 and a 67 year-old, who occasionally were a bit out of breath!! When we thought that we couldn't go on, one of the team was at the top of the path with hot orange drink and a kit kat! Perfect. We got on very well with Tsheten. To begin with we talked about nature, history, and enjoyed each other's sense of humour, but by the end we got onto such subjects as spirituality, religion ... and basically just enjoyed his company. I feel we will be in touch with him for a long time. As for the material side of things, we were provided with high quality material, tent and extremely warm sleeping bags (with hot water bottles!), and the food was so good and varied, and copious. Tsheten admitted to us at the end that he was a bit worried about us not eating enough to keep up the calories so the team went all out to give us as much choice as possible. It was all just delicious. They even made us an iced "happy trek" cake at 3000 metres. The view of the Kanchenjunga, the mountains surrounding it, and the sky at night, were sights that we will never forget. We enjoyed ourselves in the full knowledge that we were in extremely good hands, with plenty of resources. Posted on: 21 Dec, 2016 2:56 PM
